This cycle tour is brimming with cultural and historic highlights and makes for an unforgettable experience. Our tour takes you through the Mozart town Salzburg, the Salzkammergut Lake District, along the Danube through the vineyards of the Wachau to Vienna in spectacular fashion.

The course of your cycling tour:

Day 1: Individual Arrival in Salzburg.

Handing-over of travel documents and rented bikes.

Day 2: Salzburg – Lake Mondsee

~35 km, altitude difference ascent 383 m / descent 302 m

Along of the river Salzach you ride to the outskirts of the city. In Salzburg Nord (Itzling) take the Salzkammergut cycling trail to Eugendorf, Thalgau and further to Mondsee.

Overnight stay in Mondsee.

Day 3: Lake Mondsee – Bad Ischl

~39 km, altitude difference ascent 435 m / descent 455 m

Along the lake shore to Scharfling, over the pass (short ascent on high-pass Scharflingpass) to Lake Wolfgangsee to Strobl und further to Bad Ischl.

Day 4: Bad Ischl – Hallstatt

~47 km, altitude difference ascent 929 m / descent 929 m

Along the Traun river to Bad Goisern and further to Hallstatt along the east shore of Lake Hallstaettersee. Now you have two possibilities: Go by bike to Hallstatt around the lake (5 km) or take the ferry over the lake directly to the market place of Hallstatt.
Cycle back from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl.

Day 5: Bad Ischl – Grein by train

Leave your bike at the service centre in Bad Ischl. From the adjacent train station take a scenic ride out of the Salzkammergut to the Danube city Grein including your luggage.
Transfer from the train station to your hotel.

Day 6: Grein – Emmersdorf

~62 km, altitude difference ascent 252 m / descent 432 m

Handing over of your bikes at the hotel.

From Grein through the romantic Strudengau in the narrow Danube valley. You pass the Roman village of Ybbs and go further to Melk – the so-called „Gate to the Wachau“. We recommend visiting the abbey of Melk. Afterwards it is a short trip to Emmersdorf, on the opposite site of the Danube.

Day 7: Emmersdorf – Krems

~35 km, altitude difference ascent 233 m / descent 257 m

Lush vineyards line your way to Krems. You can choose on which site from the Danube you ride – most cyclists prefer the left side with its picturesque villages Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Duernstein.

Day 8: Krems – Tulln

~46 km, altitude difference ascent 17 m / descent 36 m

For the most part the route declines softly and you can enjoy the views and landscape on your last stage in a relaxed manner. From Tulln take the train to Vienna where you give back your bikes.

General information:

The cycle tours don’t have any technical difficulties, there are only very few ascents! A reasonable fitness level is necessary to enjoy this trip as well as cycle equipment like sneakers, rucksack, sun- and rain protection, comfortable sports cloths, jacket, jumper, and so on. The routes are suited for trekking bikes - mostly they are asphalted cycle paths, a few stretches are gravel and forest paths. Should you want to spend a quiet day, you can cover most distances by public transport like bus, train or boat.

The local tax, also known as visitor's tax, is payable locally to the landlord; the amount depends on the resort and is between 1,00€ and 4,00€ per person per night. Children up to the age of 15 are usually exempt.

Accommodation:
Twin-bedded rooms in Austrian resorts are normally one large base with two mattresses/duvets. These are also known as 'Austrian Twins' and are regarded as two beds. Separate twin beds are rare and cannot be guaranteed as available.
Location of the accommodation are mainly close to the trails.

Information for arrivals by car:
The parking place does not always situate next to the accommodation but on a public parking place. (Possibly costs have to be paid on spot)

"A tree for your booking" – Cooperation project with Austrian Federal Forests

For every bike or hiking tour in the region booked with us, a tree is planted in the Weißenbach valley – near Bad Ischl. With this campaign we want to generate awareness for climate-friendly travel and take responsibility for a world worth living in.

The UNESCO World Heritage List currently lists 1,154 natural and cultural sites from 167 countries worldwide. The excellent cultural and natural monuments have an extraordinary universal value that must be preserved in the long term. Austria is represented with 10 World Heritage Sites.

The European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 brought the diversity of historically rooted and contemporary art and culture to the forefront and raised it to an international level.
